What is Botox?®
A combination of factors can cause facial lines. It’s not just about the cellular changes that occur over time, or reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.
Repeated frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows involve muscle contractions and cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a quick 10-minute treatment that works beneath the surface to fix these facial lines. It is a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum, an organism found in the natural environment where it is largely inactive and non-toxic.
With a very tiny needle, a few drops of Botox® are into the muscle that creates a wrinkle. The Botox® blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area and, as a result, the muscle relaxes.
Are Botox® injections painful?
When Botox® is injected, there is a minor stinging for a few seconds which dissipates quickly. There is typically no other sensation after the injection.
Where is Botox® injected?
The most common areas Botox® injections are the frown lines between the eyebrows, the horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet.
The effects of Botox® usually last three to five months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of Botox® may begin to last longer, sometimes up to six to eight months.
Safety of Botox®
Botox® has been used safely in medicine for over 15 years, and for wrinkle therapy for over 10 years. In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the only possible side effects are temporary and localized to the area of the injection.
